In September 2021, Island Energy was engaged by the YMCA Victoria Discovery camps to undertake a preliminary feasibility study into their carbon emissions. Our sustainability consultants worked with the project lead Joel Thompson to prepare a business case for an emissions reduction program. Through the research our team identified key opportunities for the Y to not only reduce their carbon footprint and GHG emissions, but also become more profitable whilst undertaking an environmental action plan.

Why Emissions Reduction is Crucial
Environmental issues are among the most pressing concerns for today’s youth, who are calling for urgent action. YMCA Discovery Camps recognise the need to address these concerns by actively reducing their carbon footprint and fostering an environment of sustainability.
Key Sustainability Initiatives
Renewable Energy Integration : The camps are installing solar panels, hydro systems, and other renewable energy sources to transition away from fossil fuels.Electrification and Efficiency : Efforts are underway to electrify 80% of energy sources and phase out inefficient appliances and gas usage.Waste Reduction Programs : Implementing comprehensive waste reduction strategies to minimise environmental impact.Green Education Programs : Incorporating environmental education into camp activities to teach campers about conservation and sustainability.
Twelve Strategic Actions for Sustainability
Measure and monitor energy consumption Install renewable energy systems (solar, hydro) Transition gas appliances to electric Achieve CA Certification Phase out energy-inefficient appliances Electrify 80% of energy sources Develop waste reduction programs Phase out fossil fuels Take selected buildings off the grid Embed green education programs Appoint sustainability champions Explore innovative carbon offset purchasing
Currently, the YMCA Discovery Camps in Victoria are well on track to reduce their emissions by 30% prior to 2025 by actively working towards their emissions reduction goals. They are making significant progress in several key areas, including the installation of renewable energy systems like solar panels, implementing waste reduction programs, and electrifying a majority of their energy sources. They are also focusing on green education programs and seeking ClimateCertification. These actions are part of their strategic plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, with an interim goal of a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025.
